Mental Health and Substance Use Series provided by St. Joseph's Care Group.
One in five people will experience some form of mental health or substance use issue in their lifetime. Whether or not you work with clients who are dealing with a mental health or substance use issue, there is a good chance that you will care for someone who requires attention to these issues. Being aware of the causes of mental health and substance use issues is a first step to knowing how to best support someone who is experiencing these health issues.
This series is divided into seven courses. Once you enroll, you can select the courses that are of interest to you. Each course is about 45 minutes. After each course, you will receive a Certificate of Completion. If you complete the series you can them receive a Certificate of Completion for the whole series.

Understanding Substance Use and Mental Health Issues
To promote a better understanding of substance use and mental health that will enhance the quality of care for patients and family members living with these issues.
Reducing Stigma Through Compassion and Inclusion
To explore attitudes and beliefs regarding mental health and substance use within the context of client-centred care.
Motivating Change
To learn to promote skill development based on Stages of Change Theory, which encourages clients to make personal changes to support recovery from a variety of health issues using “motivational interviewing” techniques.
Building Resiliency
To promote effective stress management skills to build interpersonal strengths and resiliency.
Neurobiology of Substance Use
To understand the neurobiological processes associated with mental health and substance use issues.
Responding to Opiate Use
To enhance the knowledge and understanding regarding health care professionals working with patients being treated for pain management with opiates.
Trauma and Substance Use and Mental Health
To understand the relationship between trauma, substance use and mental health.
Trauma Informed Care
To provide information about Trauma Informed Care, rationale as to why we want to be trauma informed, and trauma informed care in the context of what you do and where you work.
Compassion Fatigue
To provide strategies to identify and address compassion fatigue among care providers.
